Life After Camelot: Kenicha Dorvil
Kenicha Dorvil, a Phoenix Academy graduate, currently holds the title of Miss Port-au-Prince International 2017, and was recently named First Runner Up for Miss Haiti International 2016. She wrote a note on how her experience at Camelot schools in Lancaster changed her life:
My name is Kenicha Dorvil and I am 21 years old. I am in my third year in college and my major is Human Services. I hold the title of Miss Port-au-Prince International 2017, and was First Runner Up for Miss Haiti International 2016. My platform is Child Abuse and Neglect. How did I get here though?
In 2011 and 2012 I attended Camelot of Buehrle in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Sometimes people hear that you’re a student at Buerhle and think you’re a delinquent. They put you in a box called the “NO FUTURE.” I had so many family members who doubted me and said I would become a nobody, but my family at Buerhle did not doubt me one bit. I received all of the staffs’ support. When I wanted to give up they were all by my side. I got in trouble a couple of times at Buerhle I lost a lot of privileges but my Buehrle family did not give up on me. They helped me through it all.
After completing my year at Buehrle I went to Phoenix Academy in 2012-2014 to finish my high school years. I was still in the box called the “NO FUTURE.” I got treated the same by my blood family and family friends. I remained to myself I didn’t let anything they said bother me and distract me from where I wanted to go. I knew what I wanted to do, I knew what I wanted to be and I knew how my life would be. If it wasn’t for my family at Buerhle and Phoenix I did not know where I would be. Those two schools got me where I am at today. I am now in my third year in college majoring in Human Services to become a Social Worker, I have been named First Runner Up for Miss Haiti International and I am fighting to end Child Abuse and Neglect, I am planning on having my own organization to help victims of abuse. Those who doubted me are now in shock.
My advice to those who attend or attended Camelot of Buehrle and Phoenix Academy is to keep your head up, don’t let anyone tell you who you are, what you’re going to be. Be the one who tells yourself that. We all make mistakes in this world and don’t let your mistakes define who you are and have no regrets.
To all the staff at Buehrle and Phoenix thank you so much for all you’ve done for me, thank you for being by my side when I did good and bad, thank you for believing in me, thank you for never doubting me. If it wasn’t for you all I don’t know where I would be at this very moment. Thank you for making me who I am today.
